Weirdly Wonderful

One of MetroSeeker's favorite weird things is the Whip In. A convenience store, counter-service restaurant serving Texas-Indian food, and concert venue with 60 beers on tap, the Whip In is a real Austin original.

Austin is home to the largest urban colony of Mexican free-tail bats in the United States. People gather each night from spring to fall to wait for the colony to emerge from their home under the Congress Avenue Bridge and fly east over Lady Bird Lake on their nightly feeding foray.  The MetroSeeker.com staff can't get enough!

Driving around Austin you'll see some street lighting fixtures that have been in place since 1894. These "Moonlight Towers" were the first downtown city night illumination in Austin. 17 of the original 31 are still standing and in use today! Take a self tour and see how many you can track down.
